History

Swa Ultimate was founded as a response to the needs of having a local Ultimate Frisbee team in Cambodia. Currently, there are only teams of expat players who meet regularly for pick-up games in the city. 

In 2011, a group of American youth from the Youth Ultimate Project came to Cambodia to introduce the game of Ultimate Frisbee to Cambodian youth for the first time. They hosted a two-week camp where they coached us the rules, tricks, and techniques of how to play Ultimate Frisbee. The camp was a great success. We, Cambodian youth, quickly grew to love this new sport. However, after the coaches left and with the lack of training and playing experience, most of us began to abandon playing Frisbee during the year. In 2012, a group of new coaches returned for the second time of camps. This was when we started to pick up the discs and really got into it one more time. This time however it was really clear to us that we really loved this game and we began to continue to practice and join the Phnom Penh Ultimate for their weekly pick-up games during the year. Because we didn't have an organized team, many challenges arose which had kept us from achieving our goals in advancing in this sport. 

In 2013, the Youth Ultimate Project returned for the third time. The camp was again a great success. The number of campers grew to 70 in a matter of years. We can clearly see that Cambodian youth finally started to understand the value of playing this sport, but most importantly, it's a fun game! We have built a strong community and leadership from playing this sport. 

Finally, after the coaches left this year, our local youth decided to organize a team of our own. We believe that this is the only way to stay motivated and active while we're waiting for our coaches to return next year. We practice and train with Phnom Penh Ultimate every week and will do many drills and exercises on our own to stay in shape. We hope to spread the joy of Ultimate Frisbee to many other youth in Phnom Penh as well as other provinces through out Cambodia.

Goals and Visions

This is where we see ourselves and what we want to accomplish in the next few years:

1. Advance our skills by training with local and global coaches
2. Promote the game of Ultimate Frisbee to other youth in Cambodia
3. Compete in professional games and tournaments
4. Represent Cambodia in an international scene
5. Build leadership and community among players
